I created this blog as a way for us to communicate about Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why. I hope that this can be an effective means of discussing the book. If this is not what you want please let me know, I will close the blog down.
Ms. Thacker, I don't know if you would be able to get your students' email addresses before the holiday break, but if you could I would be more than happy to get them set up.
Also I would like to establish ground rules for this blog. 1. The discussions on this blog must only be about the topic of the book. There can not be any insults or inappropriate language posted on this blog. This blog is for academic purposes only. 2. This blog will only be viewed by the members of the book club.
Ms. Thacker, please feel free to add any norms you feel are necessary.
Yes I kind of thought that it would be a summary of all the tapes through Clay's listenings. But I still don't get why Hannah would want to commit suicide after moving to a new town and going to a new high school... She should have figured that she was going to get messed with because she's new. It happens almost all the time to new kids. I also think that she should have socialized more with people, since she kept most to herself. But the people she kind of talked to like Courtney Crimsen was popular and most of the time popular kids are always the ones starting the rumors. So why bottle this all up? I honestly think she should have gone out with Clay, because he's like in love with her and he would have treated her well and she probably wouldn't be dead. I also wonder what kind of pills did she take to end up dead, and where did they find her dead?
I'm up to date and to our "Stop" mark. I really do think things are getting more interesting, and just like Clay, I think the more I read each chapter, the more I come to understand Hannah a little more too.
Some kids in my group still don't understand why she committed suicide. However if you look more closely and deeper into the story, you will understand why. Imagining yourself in Hannah's shoes, how would you have withstood what she was going through? So I've decided that the reason Hannah committed suicide, was because of the pressure she was going through, and I understand that now thanks to the latest chapter, Cassette 4 Side A. To have all that trust and hoped be crushed from sight...and have control of the steering wheel on your life be taken over, I can understand how she feels.
I haven't exactly gone through what she has, but I can relate to how she must have felt. Although, I think I need to read more of the chapters to get why she committed suicide...She seems a little too smart to do something like that. But again, I must bring up the pressure.
P.S. Tony seems a little suspicious, even from when we first found out about him. I think He has something to do with the tapes too. But thats just a guess.
i love this bookk so far i cant wait to finnish it and i especially love the part when it mentioned peeping tom i personally think that was the turning point of the story and currently i am still in page 173 i havent gotten a chance to read yet but i will soon
I believe the start of all of the drama and creating her reputation was when Hannah was asked to lie about the kiss. Many people started to have a bad impression of her and stayed away from her. She didn't have a real friend who stayed by her side and her parents have been neglecting her due to their problems with their business.
Hannah has gone through a lot of pressure and betrayal. However, she did not do something about her problems. She let them slide and in the end, she committed suicide. If she did something to solve these problems when she was alive, it could have made a difference in her decision. However, she committed suicide because I believe she wanted those involved to feel bad for what they did. The people in the tape cannot make up for their wrongdoings now that Hannah is gone.
I am curious to know what Clay did. So far in the book, he seems to hate the fact that Hannah ended her own life and regretted socializing with her. I think what Clay did hurt Hannah indirectly. He didn’t know it would hurt anyone, but it hurt Hannah.
This looks great! I'm looking forward to reading and discussing Thirteen Reasons Why.

ReplyDeleteI would like to know your initial impression of the book. Did the book start the way you envision it would based on the summary?
